What Is Psyllium Fiber?

Psyllium is made from the seeds of the Plantago Ovata crop, which means "horse ear" or "horse flower" because of the shape of the seeds.



Psyllium is derived from the husk of the seed of the plantago ovata crop and has long been used as a dietary fibre supplement. A shrub-like herb native to the Mediterranean, the plantago ovata crop is also known as desert Indian wheat and blond plantain.


Psyllium was first identified as a source of mucilaginous fibre by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1988, and the World Health Organization (WHO) issued monographs on the plantago seed in 1999. It has been used in traditional treatments in India, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and elsewhere since ancient times, and is officially listed in the national pharmacopoeias of Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.
